Project Christmas Spreads the Love

Project Christmas recently collected and shipped 28 Shoeboxes to needy children around the world.
The group followed that project with a canned food drive. From November 7-17, the group collected 410 cans of food which were divided between the two county food pantries. Food will be available for those in need for thanksgiving meals.
Future projects include caroling with the Jazz Band at the nursing home and the Elf Auction to be held on December 8 in the PCHS gymnasium. This service club really knows how to spread the blessings of the season around the community.
Project Christmas wishes to thank all those who have helped the club achieve their giving goals this year.

Snowshoe Foundation Grant Supports Technology

The PCHS English Department was awarded a Snowshoe Foundation Grant in March for the purchase of a MacBook and flip camera. The grant affords students the opportunity to hone their technological skills as well as develop more avenues for creativity. 2010 Prom

The 2010 prom was held at the Opera House on May 8, 2010 from 8 - 11 p.m. After many months of planning the junior class celebrated the prom with Fire and Ice as the theme. Students danced the night away in their gowns and tuxedos to the varied music of a DJ from Pennsylvania. Finger foods were abundant. Students elected Seth Doss as the Prince of the Prom and Katelynn Beverage as the Princess of the Prom. King Josh Arbogast and Queen Adrienne Nottingham were crowned near the end of the event.

PCHS Civics Team Wins Stock Market Game

The SIFMA Foundations' Stock Market Game™ (SMG) gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. They think they're playing a game, but you know they're learning economic and financial concepts they'll use for the rest of their lives. When you hear high school students discussing investments in the halls, you’re know they’re learning something important to their financial future.
In the recent Stock Market Game which covered ten weeks and involved 10 teams from around WV, Pocahontas Team WV_68_ZZ79 with investors Gabe Beck and Sam Rose came in first in the game with total equity of $125,021.91 and 16.07% return above the S & P 500 Growth. Only two other teams in the state had positive growth above the S & P 500 Growth index.

Two other Pocahontas County teams placed in the top ten against teams from West Virginia University, Princeton High School, and Liberty High School. Other teams participating in the game were from Tygarts Valley High School and Bluefield High School. Pocahontas County had 11 teams in the spring game with the following rankings:

Considering that the teams had invested their money for 10 weeks, any group who had earnings over 100,000 did exceptionally well. The stock market would likely have made money for all the teams if the portfolios existed for the long term as the stock market inevitably earns money on a 13 to 16 year cycle. Considering that the economy has been in rebuilding mode since March of 2008, all these teams are commended for the portfolios they established and monitored in a highly volatile market.

Thanks to Sam and Gabe the class will enjoy a $100.00 pizza party on May 13 compliments of the SIFMA Foundation.

Lockman Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

For the second time in two years, Principal Tom Sanders has been notified that a Warrior scholar has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Martin Lockman was informed on February 22, 2010 that he had been selected as a finalist. The selection of some 8200 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 Finalists is now in progress. In March, National Merit Scholarship Corporation will begin mailing scholarship offers to winners. Congratulations and our best wishes for a successful outcome goes to Martin Lockman who joins Trevor Caplinger, our 2009 National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

PCHS Wii Project Update

The Wii has been ordered. Thanks to the investment of 29 stockholders, the project earned $282.00 which was used to purchase the Wii and an extra controller. As soon as the Wii arrives, the first stockholders meeting will occur. The Civics students appreciate your support of our project.

Opera House Open House

Girls Basketball Tournament

Come out and cheer for the girls basketball team this weekend as they host Summers County, Pike View, and Independence in a Holiday Basketball Tournament. Games start at 6 pm with Summers going up against Pike View. The Lady Warriors take the court at 8 pm against Independence. The Consolation Game and Championship Game will be Saturday at 6 and 8 pm respectively.

Elf Auction

Christmas Parade

Get into the Christmas spirit tonight in Marlinton and watch our PCHS band march down main street! The parade starts at 7 pm and there are lots of other activities in town including dinner with Santa at the elementary school, a nativity at the Presbyterian Church, a tree lighting at the train station, and a craft show at the Opera House.

Civics Students Issue Stock Shares for PCHS Wii

Since October the Civics classes have been learning about the stock market using a simulation called The Stock Market Game . In this simulation teams have invested in stocks which they researched to increase their initial equity of $100,000.00. The game has taught them about the importance of diversification of portfolios, the costs of investing, equity maintenance, and selecting and tracking stocks to reap the maximum return. The simulation is due to end on December 5.

Since the students have learned the ways of the stock market by simulating it, the group decided to attempt to earn money for a PCHS Wii system by issuing shares of stock in this capital investment. If enough shares can be sold to purchase this new technology, the shareholders will have a stockholders meeting to determine how and when the equipment will be used in the school. If you are interested in purchasing stock at $1.00 per share, please contact Nancy Martin or see one of the Civics students who sell shares during the lunch break at the Warrior Statue.

Candy Corn Queen!

Spanish Trip Scrip

Don't know what to get for that hard-to-shop for person? How about a gift card to their favorite restaurant or store? You'll not only be making them happy, but you will also be helping raise money for the Spanish Club's trip to Spain in April 2010.

You'll have to act fast and see Mrs. Minter for information if you want to order Christmas gifts, the last scrip order for 2009 is due December 1. However, since this is an ongoing fundraiser you can place an order the 1st of every month. Gift cards can be used anytime and make excellent presents all year long.

FBLA Bake Sale

PCHS Drama Students Present "The Homecoming"

The PCHS drama students will present the heartwarming Christmas play "The Homecoming" on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building at the high school. Tickets will be $3 for students and $4 for adults.

"The Homecoming" is the play that kicked off the long-running, popular TV series "The Waltons" and tells the story of an Appalachian family celebrating Christmas during the Depression.

Jeff Fertig Breaks State High Jump Record

Jeffrey Fertig broke the State High Jump Record at the State Track Meet in Charleston, WV on May 23, 2009 with a jump of 6 feet 5 inches to break the current record of 6 feet 4 inches held by Clint Wilson of Bishop Donahue set in 2006. What a way to go out of PCHS. Jeff earned a sixth place in the long jump event with a jump of 19'1" (22'7" was the top score in the event) Jeff graduates on May 30. We all applaud you, Jeff.

Abrahm Rittenhouse earned a first place finish in the 3200 meter with a time of 10:07.02 and he earned a second place finish in the 1600 meter with a time of 4:37:01.

Team scores for the boys track teams which earned PCHS a single A division sixth place overall in the State meet achieved the following positions:

Shuttle hurdle relay team (Casey Withers, Andy Hefner, Noah Pugh aand Jesse Bolyard)finished 6th with a time of 1:04.25. Winning finish time was 1:00.76.2 for Buffalo.

4X100 team ( Andy Hefner, Aaron Totten, Dexter Skidmore, and Tanner Graham) earned a sixth place finish with a time of 46.63. The winning team Valley Wetzel had a time of 45.43.2.

4x200 team ( Andy Hefner, Aaron Totten, Dexter Skidmore, and Tanner Graham) earned a third place finish with a time of 1:35.74.4. Charleston Catholic took the event with a time of 1:34.23.2

4X400 team (Trevor Caplinger, Abe Rittenhouse, Jesse Bolyard, and Josh Arbogast) earned a sixth place finish with a time of 3:40.87. Winning time for this event was 3:44.88.2 for the team from Charleston Catholic.

4x800 team (Trevor, Abe, Jesse, and Grant Langston) earned a fourth place finish with a time of 8:45.42 to Charleston Catholics' winning team time of 8:28.82.

Discus - Evan Rose threw 124'8" for a sixth place finish.

Girls Events

Melody Walkup earned a sixth place finish in the 800 with a time of 2:35.94.

With 22 schools fielding teams in the meet, PCHS has again demonstrated the talent and drive that has achieved championship status this year. Congratulations to all our track and field stars on a job well done.

Baseball Team Wins Class A Regional Championship

Congratulations to the Baseball team for winning the Class A Region 3 Section 1 Championship on May 14, 2009 with a score of 14-0 over Richwood. The team will now play in the Regional Semi-Final Game on Warrior Baseball Field against the Valley (Fayette) team on Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m. Kevin McCall became the first player in PCHS history to record 100 career hits in this game. Come support another Warrior team taking it all the way.

The PCHS yearbook staff is currently starting to sell yearbooks for this year. The yearbook staff has worked diligently on the layouts and the style of the student body's 2008-2009 yearbook. This year's theme is SMOKE SIGNALS, a tribute to the schools old newspaper. The yearbooks are currnetly for sale to the student body and faculty for $40.00. Next week the yearbooks will be on sale for $45.00. Name engravings are not an option this year. All layouts and pages are in COLOR this year. That's the first time ever! Comparable yearbooks in the past have cost up to $65.00

The yearbook will include Senior Superlatives, people in their cars, people at work, winning teams galore, and this year may be the first year you will ever see GHA or GSA in the yearbook. If you are interedsted in purchasing a yearbook at this fabulous price please see the yearbook sales staff at either Mrs. Kesterson's Room during 3A or in front of the Warrior statue during both lunch shifts through Friday March 20th. Yearbooks at $40.00 stop on Friday March 13th.

Lady Warriors Go To State Tournament

For three years, my team, the Lady Warriors have huddled in the middle of the gym after every practice and shouted, 1-2-3-STATES! Now that we have finally made it, we had to think of a different chant.

Since I was a freshman, the Lady Warriors have been sectional champions. This year, we played Midland Trail in the first round of sectionals, beating them 80-25. We were all eager for the next game, the sectional championship against Fayetteville. However, we played one of our best games of the season with a 80-35 win. Our anxiousness turned into total energy that would propel us through our regional championship game and by playing 'team ball' we downed Greater Beckley Christian. We were regional champs for the first time in years.

We, (the Lady Warriors) were ranked fourth of the elite eight, and are scheduled to challenge Parkersburg Catholic at the State Tournament in Charleston on Wednesday at 9:00 pm. Meanwhile we are busy preparing for the most important game we have faced the entire basketball season.

Come and support us in our first game of the State Tournament. The cheering and support of our fans is greatly appreciated.

PCHS Students Will Hear Supreme Court

On March 25, 2009 select social studies students will hear the West Virginia Supreme Court in Lewisburg, WV in a potentially precedent-setting case. Students are the guests of the court in the LAWS program which takes the court to different regions of the state on a rotating basis. Monroe, Greenbrier East, Greenbrier West and PCHS students will hear four different cases on that day. Students at PCHS are being advised by local prosecuting attorney, Donna Price, and attorney-at-law, Mike Doss, who have visited classes at the high school to discuss the specifics of the Supreme Court and the appeal the students will witness. Students will eat lunch at Greenbrier East High School following their court observation at Greenbrier County Courthouse. Following lunch they will debrief with a panel of attorneys. Students are expected to hear the outcome of the case following this term of court sometime in May before many of them graduate.

Mr. Doss said this would only be the third time he has ever been before the Supreme Court. The first time he was sworn in as an attorney, the second time he presented a case, and this time he will be the PCHS's advisory lawyer. The students have a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the actions of our highest state court.

Coach Sheets Reaches Record 350 Wins

Coach Bob Sheets reached his career win record of 350 games on Friday, February 6, 2009 with a close win over Tucker County 56-53. Coach Sheets has coached 31 years at Pocahontas County High School with both boys and girls teams. Trevor Caplinger Becomes Finalist National Merit Scholar

Building Construction Project

The building construction class, under the supervision of Mr. Duane Gibson, is currently building a three bedroom house. As of now the vinyl siding is up, the plumbing is complete, and the heating system is installed. Recently Mr. Ziegler's class has been busy equipping the house with electricity. After this is complete Mr. Gibson's class will return to hang sheet rock and put in insulation. The house is built in two pieces and consists of three bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen/dining room, a utility room, and living room. The finish date is unknown at this point, but next year is the estimated time of completion. Once the house is finished, it will be sold and the profit will be used to begin a new project.--Emily B.

Social Studies Classes Create E-Gov Websites

The Civics Classes and ESSH have entered into a project sponsored by the Governor to create websites for all county offices and the three municipalities of Durbin, Hillsboro, and Marlinton this year. As part of a grant supported by the Benedum Foundation and other agencies, the students will create county and local government websites. The lofty goal of the three year project is to have all 55 counties and many municipalities to have web pages housed on the West Virginia Department of Education website by the end of 2010. Students in the classes are learning interviewing skills, web design and their local governments on a personal level. Students received a laptop computer, a digital camera and a camcorder to create these websites. The biggest challenge we have faced so far is being able to contact these local officials who often work in personal businesses and do government duties as a second job. Students will be contacting some new personnel who don't take their positions until the beginning of the year.

Features of the websites will include frequently asked questions, contact information for government leaders, agencies within their walls, links to local areas of interest, and scenes of our beautiful county. Plans include video streaming in the near future of county activities like our local fairs and festivals, youth activities, and other occasions that occur in our communities.

Mike Callison Wins Army Ironman of the Week for Week 10

Mike Callison was recognized as the Army Ironman for Week 10 by the Sports Flash Radio Network. Mike in Pocahontas County ’s 56-13 win over Webster County had 232 all-purpose yards, throwing for 93 yards and a touchdown, rushing for 53 yards and a touchdown, grabbing two receptions for 41 yards, returning a kick-off for a 85-yard touchdown while kicking a 20-yard field goal and an extra point. Some players can do it all.

Last year I read a book called The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. Randy was a teacher at Carnegie Mellon University who was dying of cancer. In addition to being a very inspiring book, I discovered a program called Alice as a result of my reading. Alice teaches students computer programming in a 3 D environment. Since then I have downloaded the free version of Alice and installed it in our high school computer lab. Alice is remarkably friendly program with built in tutorials. If you have not used Alice, stop in the computer lab and try out the tutorials, and if you want your own version to use at home, go to the Alice website at http://www.alice.org/. Sadly Randy Pausch died in 2008, but he has left the world an inspiring book and a wonderful way to learn computer programming.

Youth of Pocahontas Support Relay for Life

On September 13, 2008, the Youth of Pocahontas Team earned over one thousand dollars for the local Relay for Life Breast Cancer Event. Team Captain, Khris Smith, said the team walked 14 miles in the event. Using the state of Massachusetts as their backdrop, the group displayed maps of Boston harbor, lighthouses, symbols of the Red Socks, and they sold tea in honor of the BostonTea Party. With a printer donated by Jim Smith, the group held an auction. They had a Dance for the Cure with the support of Phillip Anderson's Dance Dance Revolution unit. Khris had high praise for his team of Mandy Lester, a junior, and Rachel Cain, Nathan Hamons, Merandia Shinaberry, and Roger Ray, sophomores. Khris said the team plans to work for the cause again next year, and they invite others to join in this worthy cause.

Trevor Caplinger - Nat'l Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist

When Trevor Caplinger took his PSAT's (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) his junior year, he didn't realize how important this test could be to him. In September Trevor received word that he was a National Merit Semifinalist based on his test scores. In addition to taking the test, Trevor wrote an essay outlining his leadership skills and his extracurricular activities. In those areas, Trevor has much diversity with Student Council, Youth Group, 2 years in Jazz and Regular Bands, and 4 years in Soccer, Basketball, and Track.

In October, Trevor took the SAT and hopes that he achieved a comparable score. Though a minimal number of finalists actually win the $2500.00 scholarships if named National Merit Finalists, Trevor said the prestige and recognition gained from being in the competition has already gotten him some offers. Trevor will learn in February, 2009 if he is a Finalist, but in our book, he is already a winner. We expect to hear in the future that Trevor has won some honor in the School of Engineering at WVU.

Since 1993, more than 61 million shoe boxes have been packed, shipped, and delivered across the globe. People of all ages can be involved in this simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ."

Spirit Week 2008

"Warrior Fever...Catch It " is the theme for this year's week. Students created bulletin boards and door decorations during the week ending on October 3. Seniors Complete Senior Projects

The first round of senior presentations following summer mentorships will happen on October 6 during the first IS day of the school year. Seniors mentored with local professionals to get a hands-on view of the career they planned to pursue. Seniors in this photo practiced tying ties in Civics class to have that career ready look for presentation of a portfolio which documents the experience and for making a brief speech to a committee of teachers. Students earn one half credit for the mentorship and demonstration, which is a requirement for graduation. All mentorship presentations this year must be completed by Friday, February 13, 2009 according to Mike Burns, the director of the work-based learning program.

Golf Team Goes to State Tournament

The Golf Team squeezed by Midland Trail in the Regional Tournament at the Briar Patch in Beckley on September 29, 2008 to take a seed in the State Tournament on October 7 and 8. in Wheeling at Jones Course. Fayetteville took top seed with a score of 403 while Pocahontas scored 412 and Midland scored 413 in the regional match. Senior Aaron Totten placed second in individual standings. Team members: Aaron, Ernie, Gabrielle, Jairus, Reid, Sarah, Coy, Brandon, Zach, Logan, and Tim were surprised at their success. When asked by this reporter which course they enjoyed playing, Aaron said, "The Greenbrier was the nicest course." Ernie commented that he thought The Raven was the most challenging.

Ernie described his teammate Aaron as the most likely golfer on the team to score a hole in one, and he described himself as a good recovery guy who knew how to play out of the woods. We wish our golfers many holes in one and a very successful experience at the State Tournament.

Kendall Beverage Named Army Ironman of the Week

Pocahontas County's Kendall Beverage was chosen for the Army Iron Man of the Week Award for week 3 that honors the best two-way high school football players in West Virginia. Beverage returned an interception for a 26-yard touchdown and rushed for 43 yards as Pocahontas County beat Pendleton County, 47-0. Kendall is now in the running for Army Iron Man of the Year against other strong athletes around the state. Congratulations, Kendall.

Pocahontas County High School Meets AYP

Pocahontas County High School has been informed that the students of the year 2007-2008 earned scores high enough to meet AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) as defined by the No Child Left Behind Standards. To reach this proficiency level, students had to reach a score of 65 percent in Math and 75 percent in Reading. Last years sophomores scored 76% in Math and 80% in Reading as measured by WESTEST. Graduation Rate for the senior class was 87%.

Students in all grades recently pilot tested the new WESTEST 2 which will be taken in the spring by students in grades 9-11.

Sophomores will prepare for future college admission by taking the ACT Plan test in late October or early November. The information provided by PLAN can help students to identiy educational strengths and weaknesses and plan for the future. Additionally this "pre" ACT assessment can determine if a student is on track to be eligible for the PROMISE Scholarship.
